USAGE ANALYTICS

Top Talkers and Bandwidth Analysis

Rank the IP addresses producing or consuming the most traffic in a selected period.

OPERATIONAL PURPOSE

Move from a network signal to verified context.

Compare inbound, outbound and total usage using volume, packet count, peak rate and overall traffic share.

Investigation workflow

Begin with the global condition, narrow the scope by direction and subnet, identify the responsible source and destination relationship, and compare the result with historical behavior before taking action.

CORE CAPABILITIESACTIVE
  • One-hour to 30-day analysis windows
  • Inbound, outbound and total filters
  • Peak throughput and packet metrics
  • Overall traffic-share calculation
  • IP-level consumption ranking
SHARED DATA CONTEXT

Built to work with the complete Flowtrion platform.

This module uses the same inventory and telemetry model as realtime analytics, security controls, historical reporting and BGP operations.

NetFlow / IPFIX

Use detailed flow relationships for capacity, application and source-destination analysis.

sFlow

Maintain scalable traffic and PPS visibility across high-speed, high-port-count environments.

SPAN / Port Mirroring

Add focused packet-copy visibility for critical services, VLANs and investigation points.

OPERATIONAL WORKFLOW

Find the endpoints and services driving bandwidth demand

Top-talker analysis explains who is consuming capacity, where traffic is going and which protocol or service is responsible. Flowtrion ranks sources, destinations and conversations using normalized flow telemetry.

Data inputs and analysis

NetFlow, IPFIX and sFlow records supply byte, packet, address, port, protocol, interface and subnet dimensions. Sampling and flow timeout choices should be documented because they influence ranking precision.

Operators can compare inbound and outbound consumers, narrow results to a subnet or interval and distinguish a legitimate bulk transfer from scanning, exfiltration or an unexpected application change.

Operational outcomes

  • Identify the sources and destinations driving utilization.
  • Explain capacity spikes with protocol and port context.
  • Support fair-use, planning and troubleshooting workflows.
  • Pivot from a ranked endpoint into detailed traffic history.

Deployment considerations

Include the relevant edge and internal exporters, normalize interface speeds and verify address ownership. Rankings should be interpreted with the sampling method and observation window in mind.

Top-talker findings can be correlated with anomaly, DNS, SMTP, history and BGP views to turn a utilization symptom into an actionable investigation.
